Greyhound is an American war film based on the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd by C. S. Forester. This film was directed by Aaron Schneider and starring Tom Hanks, who also wrote the screenplay. The hero of Greyhound is Commander Ernest Krause, commanding officer of the USS Keeling, codenamed Greyhound. Ernest receives his first war-time assignment in command of a multi-national escort group defending a merchant ship convoy under attack by submarines in early-1942 during the Battle of the Atlantic. The film features one long 48-hour fight, skillfully pumped up by a disturbing soundtrack and powerful sound effects. Greyhound was filmed aboard a real World War II destroyer USS Kidd (DD-661) for more realism. This Fletcher-class destroyer, the most massive class of warships in history, has become a museum in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Sea scenes were filmed onboard a modern ship, the Canadian Navy frigate HMCS Montréal (FFH 336). As in the original novels by C. S. Forester, the filmmakers do not bother to clarify the nautical terminology, unleashing dialogues on the viewer that are almost 80% jargon. All in all, Greyhound is a quality war drama that tells the story of two days in the life of a destroyer captain of a convoy escorting civilian ships in the North Atlantic.
