It's 1971, and 2000 members of the Pakistani Army—armed with tanks—are at war with just 120 men in a battalion of Indian soldiers based in the Longewala region of Rajasthan in India.

Ganga is sexually molested, assaulted, tortured and killed by a goon employed by Pagla Jaan, a Kolkata-based notorious gangster, whose wealth, power, and influence are beyond imagination. Deva undertakes to locate the killer, succeeds in his mission and beheads him publicly. Deva does not know that soon his friends' and family's lives will be endangered, and he, himself, will be hunted down - not only by an enraged Pagla Jaan and his army of goons - but also by the Police.

Vidya lives a middle-class lifestyle in a virtually lawless town called Amarpur, India, along with her widower and disabled dad, Shambhu; married brother, Shiva and his wife, Lata; and her paternal grandma. She studies in the Arts Commerce and Science college in Bombay, and is summoned home to get married to a man of her family's choice, to which she reluctantly agrees. Vasu and Radhika try to avoid Radhika's arranged marriage by saying that she loves Ramesh, a fictional man. However, they get into trouble when a man named Ramesh really walks into their life.

Kochubaby, a blind man, falls in love with Mary, a blind orphan girl, and gets married to her. Unfortunately, Mary dies in an accident and Kochubaby struggles to look after their only daughter.

Karthy (Sharbani Mukherjee) belongs to a prestigious Hindu tharavadu. She falls in love with a Muslim trader named Maamootty (Prakash Bare) and starts living in Maamootty's house after converting to Islam. But she doesn't give up her original beliefs of her original religion Hinduism. To save Karthy from the need to go to the temple, Maamootty builds one inside his house. When the local Muslim people came to know about this, they create problems and this forces the couple to move apart.

This story is about Deputy Superintendent of Police Bhagat Pandey (Om Puri), who is thorough, honest, and has an excellent track record of apprehending criminals. This background creates problems for him with other criminals who are closely connected to powerful politicians. As a result he is transferred to Bombay (now know as Mumbai). He takes charge of his post, and transforms everything to a diligent and honest policing machine. Unfortunately, politicians and criminals alike do not like his diligence, and talk about transferring him to Kashmir, where he will be killed in an encounter by a terrorist. Bhagat also comes in touch with suspended Police Inspector Sukhdev Singh, and gangleader, Rajnath Guru, the son of a freedom-fighter, Dinanathji (Aloknath).

Fast-talking, shifty eyed Chief Minister is due for surgery but develops complications and passes away. He is whisked away by Yumraaj, the God of Death, to the heavenly gates, where the Minister must make a choice between Heaven and Swarg. Heaven did not seem too colorful, so the Minister chose Swarg, full of song and beautiful dancing women. Once in Swarg, he meets with Lord Indra, and sets about expressing dissatisfaction about the way things are run in Swarg. He then sets about creating chaos and division to the bewildered inhabitants, into creating a oppostion to Lord Indra, with hilarious and unpredictable results.
