A series of events unfold like a chain reaction, all stemming from a minor event that brings the film's five characters together. Set in Paris, France, Anne is an actress whose boyfriend Georges photographs the war in Kosovo. Georges' brother, Jean, is looking for the entry code to Georges' apartment. These characters' lives interconnect with a Romanian immigrant and a deaf teacher.

Vazquez, 60, owns a small French publishing house. His mother, a Spanish refugee, raised him in the memory of a father, hero of the resistance under Franquism. His daughter Lauriane, 30, has a complicated love life, but still lives with her father.

The kidnapping and murder of a young woman on France’s Mediterranean coast reawakens horrors of the past. Three years ago, criminologist Ariane’s cousin was killed and her mother, homicide inspector Sandra, was suspected to be involved in the case. When Sandra’s former boss invites her to help out on the new case, mother and daughter, who had a visceral falling-out over Elodie’s murder, have to join forces.

Jean-Pierre is a brilliant surgeon. The problems of his nearest and dearest don't interest him. But when he discovers that he too has a serious heart disease which needs operating on, Jean-Pierre finds out what it is to be a patient.
