Musette and Marcel, friends of Mimi, also try to break up the romance by introducing Mimi to other men, and Rudolphe becomes jealous and leaves her. Brokenhearted, Mimi declines in health and eventually throws herself into the river but is rescued and taken to the hospital. Realizing it is only a matter of time before she dies, she drags herself back to the room where she and Rudolphe were happiest. Rudolphe is there and she dies knowing that he loves her.

This state of affairs continues on and off, until Pearl by accident came across the book and understands her beau's strange actions. The next time Chester calls, Pa again wills that he go, but Pearl wills that he remain and Chester is kept running in and out of the house until Pearl's superior and stronger will wins and he remains. Pa sinks exhausted and consents to allowing Chester's attentions to Pearl

It was later done in a more famous 1931 film named Svengali with John Barrymore. The later film obviously changed the title due to the huge presence of its star.
