Michele, a young high school mathematics teacher, moves into a new apartment in Rome, where he becomes acquainted with his neighbors: a couple struggling with the routines of married life and a charming older man with a zest for living. Deeply lonely, depressed, and neurotic, Michele spends his free time spying on the people around him, especially young couples. When, out of the blue, a new French teacher named Bianca arrives at the school, Michele finds himself falling for her, an encounter that marks a turning point in his carefully controlled world.

Young Father Giulio returns to Rome, where he was born and raised, to replace a priest who has left the clergy to start a family. He is delighted to reunite with his loved ones, especially his mother, sister, and old friends. Once radical leftists like Giulio himself, the latter are now each coping in their own way with the defeat of the revolution. Soon, however, Giulio realizes that despite his efforts to help and offer advice, he is unable to solve the problems troubling those around him.
