He spends ten long years in jail during which his no good wife gambles away all his money and raises his little daughter into an ungrateful slutty teen with an attitude. When he returns to his former life. He generously loans money to a high class gal, Cecilia Yip with financial troubles. His wife and daughter leave him. In despair over the mess he has made of his life, he proposes to Cecilia hoping to start over and go straight. In spite of their different class status, the two fall for each other and make a go of her failing factory.

Police Inspector Pao is trying to catch Mak Kwan, a gang member who is first arrested, but then escapes from the prison. By chance, Pao realizes that the target of Kwan's gang is the H.K. Jockey Club.

Chan Siu Hong is a lawyer who goes into jail after hitting a vicious policeman. He's welcomed by the inmates because he convinces fellow inmates not to use violence to settle every dispute.

Happy Ever After is a 1999 Hong Kong grand-production television period drama. A TVB production, the drama was produced by Chong Wai-kin, written by Chan Ching-yee and Choi Ting-ting, and stars an ensemble cast. The drama is set during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor of Late Imperial China's Qing dynasty. The drama tells of a story regarding the struggles of a poor chef and his best friend earning an opportunity to serve the Qianlong Emperor, also befriending the emperor along the way. The drama also places an emphasis on Chinese cuisine with documentations concerning the Manchu Han Imperial Feast. Happy Ever After acclaimed positive reviews from critics and was TVB's third highest-rating drama of 1999, peaking to 40 points. Happy Ever After was re-broadcast on the same channel in 2007 between January and March.
