Madrid, Spain, 1975; shortly after the end of the Franco dictatorship. Six months after the mysterious death of his lover, a prestigious tailor, a married woman visits the office of the young Germán Areta, a former police officer turned private detective, to request his professional services.

Juan Gutiérrez, 44, an electrician, has been unemployed for a long time. He decides to leave his family to go find work in Madrid, believing that in the big city the opportunities will be greater. Once there, he discovers that things are not as he believed. He is an electrician. He doesn't want to clean windshields at stoplights or clean cabarets at dawn. He wants to work as an electrician. Occasionally she meets Andy, a Caribbean mulatto who boasts bulletproof optimism. With his sharp wit, he manages as best he can, trying not to be found by the immigration authorities. Despite the distances, "Gallego" and "Sudaca" become friends.

In Spain during civil war, a seminarian, Teo, is assigned to a small, remote fortress on the top of the mountain. Teo has to share a tiny place with Silverio who is already stationed there. They argue with each other over all aspects, including their personality, values and way of living. As time passes they come to understand each other and strike the subtle balance of everyday lives together. But the balance starts to shake when Solska, a wounded militia woman, comes and lives with them.

Max is a Jack Russell dog genetically modified for criminal purposes so he is able to talk. Running away from the criminals he's working for, he is wounded, then saved by detective-wannabe Alberto, who is fire and house-hunting. They end up staying with Alberto's sister-in-law Marta and her two children. Thanks to them all, Alberto finally manages to be a detective, and he and Max establish their detective agency: Sabuesos.
