Meghla, who after years discovers that her grandmother had been killed in her ancestral home in East Pakistan by a trusted retainer of the family. And many years after the tragedy, she visits Dhaka to trace her roots and faces the murderer's family who now occupies her house. Maati traces Meghla's trials with truth and humanity while tackling issues of migration, human displacement, and relationships.

The Sanyals are a large extended family composed of the nonagenarian grandfather (Haradhan Banerjee), his son (Ranjit Mallick), daughter-in-law (Laboni Sarkar) and their children of whom two, a daughter (Koel Mallick) and a son (Rishi Kaushik), live together in a mansion in Bhawanipur. There seems to be more servants in their house than family members, extending the virtues and parameters of the ideal ‘joint’ family. The film starts with everyone being excited about the return of the elder son (Babul Supriyo) from the U.S., where he had gone for work. However, all hell breaks loose when he returns with a wife (Rituparna Sengupta) and her child from a former marriage in tow.

The plot thickens when Aniket auditions a young actress, Shikha, who bares an uncanny resemblance to his wife when she was younger. Deepti enthusiastically begins to coach Shikha for her husband's film - so much so that Shikha becomes even more like the girl Deepti used to be and as a result the aging Aniket falls in love with Shikha, a woman as young as his son, despite the sadness and trouble it brings to his family.

A child named Mirza joins the crime world and gradually rises to power. Violence erupts as ganglords try to bring Mirza down.
