Set in the Bengali Renaissance of the 1930s and 1940s. A group of young intellectuals get embroiled in the struggle for Indian independence, sometimes at the expense of their personal lives.

Residents of Calcutta find solace from their hectic daily lives in conversations at one cafe or another. Newton is a member of one such group of cafe regulars. He appears to be in a romantic relationship with Ananya. Newton wants to start a business. Ananya consults her actress friend Laboni, who asks script-writer Arup to help Newton. However, Arup is perhaps too mysterious a character.

Upal is desperate for money and is used by Subimal, a wealthy businessman to get close to Preeti, a young girl who loves someone else. Upal plays a trick to break the relationship of Preeti and succeeds and also helps to bring her close to Subimal.Subimal asks him to build a divorce case by falling in love with Shreya so that the case can be stronger. Somehow however Preeti comes to know the truth and everything is spoilt.Preeti asks Upal to marry her and also promises him x amount of money and says she will take him to the U.S.Soon after marrying, she dumps him and goes away and nothing is the same again.

Vivek and Vani are Kerala Government Secretariat employees. They live in a modest house on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram together with their two children. Their lives change when under threat of job losses, the trade unions call for strike action whilst at the same time their landlord asks them to leave.
