The Lord returns home to his estate after a stay abroad. The strongman and exuberant person he was has been peeled out of him. He has good manners but is devoid of manliness and human courage.
Professor Bradford has a painter's school and a daughter named Alice. Among the students is Mr. Skönberg who is poorly talented but rich, and the professor wants Alice to marry him.
