Although Count Emanuel lives in a stately castle, he is hopelessly impoverished. In order to maintain his lifestyle, he is persuaded by a good friend to adopt the newly rich self-made millionaire Otto Meier and his family. In the period before Christmas, Mayor Wolfgang Wöller (Wepper) has to have a 'private audience' with the Pope. Not wanting to go alone, he takes the nun Hanna Jakobi (Hartwig) with him. When he arrives in Rome, however, it turns out that he is not the only one who has been invited. Deeply hurt in his pride, the mayor decides to go home, but a traffic strike thwarts this.
A group of German boys are ordered to protect a small bridge in their home village during the waning months of the second world war. Truckloads of defeated, cynical Wehrmacht soldiers flee the approaching American troops, but the boys, full of enthusiasm for the "blood and honor" Nazi ideology, stay to defend the useless bridge. The film is based on a West German anti-war novel of the same name, written by Gregor Dorfmeister.
