On Christmas Eve, at a small bar, Nam is lost in thought, trying to understand why his relationship with Nhi fell apart. Set in the heart of a Hanoi winter, 1982 follows Nguyen Thu Yen, a 40-year-old film director whose life spirals into chaos after her family’s entire savings are stolen in a scam. As financial burdens close in—her brother needs money for a wedding, her sister is drowning in debt after a failed real estate deal, and her son's graduation tutoring must be cut—Yen also faces mounting pressure from her film crew, who threaten to walk off the project without pay. Tensions rise as personal and professional worlds collide, forcing Yen to navigate a storm of sacrifice, disappointment, and resilience within her multi-generational household.

In Tokyo, police officer Mari Kouda and Chinese interpreter Ryo Arikino solve cases while bonding over meals from different cultures, forming an unexpected connection through their shared experiences.
