Biography
Sickgirl (病女) was born in 1998 in Xiamen and was abandoned at birth due to her gender, later raised by an adoptive family in Guiyang. She dropped out of school in the third grade and left home at eighteen, educating herself primarily through the internet. Her work focuses on personal history, taboo, violence, and people living on the social margins. She was shortlisted for the Three Shadows Photography Award in 2015 and the Xitek Photography Award in 2016, marking her entry into the public eye.
In 2021, her photobook u make me sick was confiscated for “obscenity,” resulting in a six-month imprisonment. After her release, she continued her artistic practice under the name VACCINE(疫瞄). Sickgirl’s creative practice is tightly interwoven with her trajectory of migration—from a solitary childhood, to an adolescence shaped by the internet as her only outlet, to years of grassroots movement across multiple countries. Photography and documentary filmmaking have become the anchor of her inner order, enabling her to regain stability within an otherwise volatile life. LINE (2020–2024) is her first feature documentary to be publicly presented, chronicling her escape, danger, love, trauma, and eventual return.
