The Analogues- The White Album Live

Written in 1967, Sgt. Pepper’s was the world’s first concept album. The Beatles went into the studio, enthusiastically embracing the possibilities for experimentation that were blossoming at the time, and with no intention of playing the album live. Firstly, because they just didn’t feel like it (due to the hordes of screeching fans), but also because it was music that supposedly couldn’t be performed on stage, as it was too complicated. But that music just had to be played live at some point! Now The Analogues’ perform this masterwork live in all its analogue glory—an honor for which no effort has been spared with regards to a truckload of wild and wonderful vintage instruments. There’s a sitar and tabla drums for ‘Within You, Without You’, a rare Lowrey keyboard for ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’; a harp for ‘She’s Leaving Home’, plus, of course, a huge array of strings and horns. This is The Analogue’s quest to faithfully perform Sgt. Pepper’s live!...as The Beatles never intended.

In 1966, The Beatles become a pure studio band. Abbey Road Studio 2 will subsequently see an explosion of creativity and innovation in song writing and recording techniques the likes of which has never been seen. It will herald one of the most productive periods ever in the history of pop music. Revolver, Sgt. Peppers' Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, The White Album, Let it Be and Abbey Road: these six iconic albums were recorded in the short space of five memorable years. But...they were never performed live. Until now! The Analogues perform all six of these albums in their entirety, precisely as the records were made at the time, using the same vintage instruments, amplifiers, sounds, live strings and horns. According to his friend Polo the “Ober-Swiss,” Max is a spineless character who lives strictly according to conventions and is never satisfied with himself or the world. In truth, Max is fictitious – born out of the fantasy of the filmmaker Clemens Klopfenstein, who created him as his alter ego. Max falls in love with the impassioned Christine, but she jilts him within a short time because of his reluctant disposition. He thus takes a decision: to call upon the “master” in the hopes that he can liberate him from the interminably same role. Based on works by Clemens Klopfenstein, the compilation film emerges as a new, self-contained story, while rendering palpable the very essence of the filmmaker.

The island of Sumatra is famous for its tobacco, as all lovers of the weed know. Its preparation, its growth and the various stages through which the fragrant leaves must pass, before they are ready for the smoker, form the interesting theme of this beautiful colored picture. The first scene shows the young plants growing close together, and the transplanting as they increase in size. The soil is poor for anything but tobacco, and one wonders how a good crop may be obtained in such poor land. We are shown, successively, the natives picking the largest leaves the inspection of the picking, and the natives carrying bundles of green tobacco to the tallying room.
