Atonement

A mathematical genius discovers a link between numbers and reality, and thus believes he can predict the future.

Ukraine, 1990s. Young Vova, cruel and tenacious, struggles to find his place among the ruthless members of the underworld in a city where crime and corruption reign.

Set in the years before and during World War I, this epic tale tells the story of a rich Argentine family, one of its two descending branches being half of French heritage, the other being half German. Following the death of the family patriarch, the man's two daughters and their families resettle to France and Germany, respectively. In time the Great War breaks out, putting members of the family on opposing sides.

With few options, newly pardoned convict Leila agrees to work as an assistant to a blind pastor. Father Jacob spends his days answering the letters of the needy, which Leila finds pointless. But when the letters stop, the pastor is devastated and Leila finds herself cast in a new role.

Lacking a traditional plot, the non-linear story follows the path of emotions and sensations. Based on actual events the film shows five acts – Miracle, Atonement, Regret, Prayer, Forgiveness – that might help us overcome the fear of death…

At first glance, Grandma Mui and Uncle Cheung look just like another ordinary elderly couple loitering outside a school wall. Grandma Mui is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and her conditions deteriorate notably after the death of her granddaughter Ka-ching from a fall off the school building, with the school officials suspected of negligence and being dishonest in their testimony. Stricken by grief, Grandma Mui’s mind falls into complete chaos as memories, delusions and reality mesh together. Uncle Cheung, indirectly connected to Ka-ching’s death, lacks the courage to tell the truth. As an act of atonement, he takes care of Grandma Mui even when the future looks bleak.

Kaya & James will sift through a web of lies and misleading half-truths to uncover the mystery behind Kate’s untimely death. Kaya and James will desperately run down every lead from a wide pool of suspects that consists of the victim’s friends and family. As they uncover the nature of the relationship the victim had with everyone at the wedding, they discover each and every one of them has a deadly secret and a motive for her murder.

Just like in her previous short films, the director - who cut her teeth in the advertising world and as the writer of a video game - throws a lot of genres and techniques into the mix: from science fiction to gangster films, from hospital eroticism to animation. Mari Gaila (Silvia Pinal), is an adulteress who lives between ragged, thieves, prostitutes, dwarfs and other misshapen beings, in a rare box at a country and a vague time. Her husband, is a poor sacristan who agrees with other relatives to do business with the display of his orphaned nephew, a mentally retarded dwarf. Caught in committing adultery with her lover, Mari Gaila is caged naked and punished by the people.
