As she starts seventh grade, Amelia (12) faces new insecurities and social norms. To fit in, she tears away parts of herself, until they take shape as a creature that forces her to confront everything she tried to leave behind.

Mari is a young school girl who has yet to conquer all her fears. She takes the long way to school every morning with her friend Momo because she finds the shorter route frightening, as well as having nightmares about having to eat carrots, peppers, and milk. The mother of an office lady sends her an old dresser. It's much too big for her small apartment, and the receiver is confused on what to do with it. One night she falls asleep after having a few drinks and wakes up after hearing strange sounds. She sees a child's figure by the table eating some rice crackers just before it slips into the wardrobe, but the wardroebe appears to be empty... Thus her life with six spirit children begins. Wasteland is a five-part anthology film that deals with isolation, mental illness, and the subjectivity of reality. Each of the five parts can be watched individually, but when viewed in sequence, each story brings out a more interesting and distinct context to its respective pieces.

When outraged Americans try to censor the film, the controversy spirals into a call to wage war on Canada and Terrance and Phillip end up on death row, with the kids their only hope of rescue.

Based on episodes of the series "Moomin Stories", the Moomins reminisce about the fondest moments of their lives. Moominpappa reminisces about his childhood; Moomintroll reminisces about how he, Sniff, and Snufkin set out to find out if Earth was truly threatened by a comet; and Moominmamma reminisces about the incredible visit of aliens from outer space.

The film tells the story of the Moomin family's preparations for winter and their hibernation, interrupted by unexpected events: the appearance of the mischievous Nibling, a visit to Too-Ticky, who lives by the sea, the adventures of Little My, rescued by Moomintroll, the exploits of the Hemulen, a sports enthusiast, and so on. The story ends with the arrival of spring, the awakening of all the inhabitants of Moominvalley, and the return of Snufkin. The film is based on episodes of the television series "Moomin Stories".
