World War I veteran Jack Dunbar who, like a lot of veterans then and now, is finding it hard to land a job. When he fixes the broken down auto of the newly rich Nicholas Small, he finally runs into some luck. The blustery Small explains that the way to get ahead is to blow your own horn, and then he takes Dunbar to an estate, where he is introduced as a millionaire.

A young wife is so absorbed in knitting her husband a vest for his birthday that she forgets to keep an eye on their two-year-old child who creeps out on the porch, and rolling himself up in a rug, falls asleep. The carpet cleaner's wagon comes to get a bundle of carpets left on the porch to be called for.

While vacationing with his father Edward at a Palm Beach hotel, George Welston becomes smitten with Eve Pendleton, the daughter of Edward's business rival Judson. After George prevents Pendleton from getting an option on a deal by racing in his car with his father's $100,000 deposit, Pendleton favors Eve's other suitor, Arthur Trask, whose gentlemanly manner conceals his intent to rob Eve and her wealthy friends.

A small boy, Bobby, substitutes some counterfeit which is intended for stage use for a real roll of bills. Two crooks steal the counterfeits on a sleeping car, and when they present one after the dinner which they hold in celebration they are promptly arrested.

Assuming the worst Geoffrey Challoner impulsively storms out of the house when he sees his new wife Robin reading old love letters. In his absence, Norman Craig, planning with his wife to lease an upstairs apartment owned by Judge Corcoran, wanders into the Challoners' apartment. Robin, mistaking him for a burglar, shoots him and then runs for a doctor. Returning, Geoffrey again rashly makes assumptions and immediately files for divorce. Mrs. Craig and Norman, who had merely fainted, are invited to Judge Corcoran's weekend home along with the Challoners, whom the judge hopes to reunite. Following a bewildering series of misadventures, including an attempted robbery by the maid and the chauffeur, Geoffrey learns that the love letters were his own, and the young couple are reconciled.

Magazine writer J. Hamilton Vance travels to the mountains of Kentucky to get local color for his stories, and falls in love with Roxie Bradley, the daughter of a moonshiner. Regarded at first with suspicion by the mountaineers, Vance finally wins their confidence and is appointed teacher in the little log school house. The former teacher, resentful at the intrusion, attempts to shoot Vance through the schoolhouse window, but Roxie intercepts the bullet. Vance nurses her back to health, engendering the jealousy of Lily Bud Raines, who starts a rumor that Vance is a federal agent spying on the moonshiners.

Aspiring writer Cuthbert Trotman moves to the big city to find success. He becomes the protégé of Harry Travistock, a wealthy man-about-town who takes Cuthbert under his wing to show him the "ways of the city". This sparks a rivalry with J. Smythe, a fashionable ladies' milliner from Paris who opens a shop across the street. A pair of kidnappers plot to abduct Mr. Skinner's daughter, Evelina, for ransom. They overhear Evelina mention she plans to buy a specific dress displayed in Smythe's window. However, Jackie buys the dress first, leading the criminals to kidnap her by mistake. Jackie is held in a deserted house. J. Smythe, who has developed feelings for Jackie despite their business rivalry, comes to her rescue. In a comedic turn, Jackie ends up saving him from a beating by dropping heavy jugs on the kidnappers' heads from above.

When he has tied it for her, a baseball, hot off the bat of a young Ty Cobb, hits the lady in the foot and she, thinking Nutt did it, hits him over the head with her handbag, then forgets to remove the bag, and Nutt discovers that it contains a nice big roll of bills. He takes a manicurist out to lunch, then accompanies her back to her place of business, a beauty parlor, where he is just in time to assume the duties of the boss, who is leaving for a vacation. After many amusing incidents, the lady who had treated him so ungratefully, enters the parlor and makes things hot for Nutt, who is finally forced to return the bag full of coin.

Hero Handsome Harry must rescue his love interest, Lizzie, from a villainous character named Creampuff. Harry is repeatedly "beaned" by a beanshooter in the hands of a villainous boy and then Creampuff, but he overcomes the obstacles, defeats Creampuff, and ultimately is arrested for carrying a concealed weapon before being freed by the triumph of justice.

The Youngloves have a cozy little apartment and a jewel of a cook, Bridget, and are happy until the landlord raises the rent. A slick agent convinces them to take a lease on "the modern Paradise” in Arcadia. A long, frightful journey takes them to "Eros Villa” a tumbledown old shack with a scrubby hedge running around it. After a veritable nightmare of a night trying to sleep on hastily-made-up hard beds and being scared nearly to death by huge rats scampering through the rooms the Youngloves rush to the agent's office, where he agrees to tear up the lease for two months' rent! The Youngloves, return to their old flat, sadder and wiser, but happy.

Charles, Joseph and Sir Benjamin are in love with Maria and Lady Sneerwell is in love with Charles.

Skinner is too timid to ask his boss for a salary increase, but also too timid to tell his wife he has not gotten it. He pretends to have received the raise and buys a new suit as proof.
