The Frog Princess

The boy has longed to visit the northern country and experience the beautiful mysteries of nature that his childhood friend Norman the Snowman has told him about. On the first day of snow in the northern country, the boy sneaks out of his house and boards a northbound train with Norman to see the mysteries of nature with his own eyes.

A fake prince is caught stealing a golden ball and banished to a magical forest, where a fairy inadvertently turns him into a frog. The enchantment can only be lifted by kissing a princess. When the frog helps to retrieve the gold ball from a deep well, he claims a reward. But will he really get the all-important kiss that will break his spell?

The film’s visual structure is principally composed of variations on the arabesque: arcs of light, water spouts, spider webs, burgeoning trees, flowers and foliage, a woman’s smile, arms stretching, an arm giving rhythm to a rocking chair. It uses natural elements (light, mirrors, water, and wind) and photographic techniques (multiple exposures and lenses) to distort the various elements, or to intensify their design.

In this experimental short film, Kristian Day collected artwork created by the public. He found the majority of the pieces at "Sharpie marker demonstration tables" and it took almost a year to collect the artwork. All pieces were created by chance with no prior thought. He originally intended on using the photos for a collage canvas piece, however after deciding that a short film would stand the test of time longer, he took individual shots of over 30 pieces. The drone music was created using a variety of simple sound generators & tapes that are being manipulated by delays, filters, and reverberation effects.
