The madcap life of eccentric Mame Dennis and her bohemian, intellectual arty clique is disrupted when her deceased brother's 10-year-old son Patrick is entrusted to her care. Rather than bow to convention, Mame introduces the boy to her free-wheeling lifestyle, instilling in him her favorite credo, "Life is a banquet, and most poor sons of bitches are starving to death."

Retired Navy Vet Franklin has lost his faith - not only in the world, but in God. After a series of what seems like a lifetime of ups and downs, he decides to take his life. Through what can only be described as divine intervention, Franklin meets Doc Light, an offbeat psychologist who will try to convince him through a series of flashbacks, that God has always been with him – even in his darkest hours.

The plot centers on students involved in the Soweto Riots, in opposition to the implementation of Afrikaans as the language of instruction in schools. The stage version presents a school uprising similar to the Soweto uprising on June 16, 1976. A narrator introduces several characters among them the school girl activist Sarafina. Things get out of control when a policeman shoots several pupils in a classroom. Nevertheless, the musical ends with a cheerful farewell show of pupils leaving school, which takes most of act two. In the movie version Sarafina feels shame at her mother's (played by Miriam Makeba in the film) acceptance of her role as domestic servant in a white household in apartheid South Africa, and inspires her peers to rise up in protest, especially after her inspirational teacher, Mary Masombuka (played by Whoopi Goldberg in the film version) is imprisoned.

This biographical film of Czech composer Martinu is in two parts: the first part is a recurring dream; the second, a Freudian analysis of the dream.

The story is essentially the same as the popular Jane Cowl play, with Talmadge in the dual role of Kathleen and Moonyean. But Clem unexpectedly dies, and Marty finds herself alone, two months pregnant.
