The Cry of the First Born

Olga Nelson, a Swedish maidservant, working at a boarding house that caters to college students, is particularly fond of one of them, wealthy Tom Gordon. When Tom receives word that his father has lost his fortune and he must quit school, he loses the remainder of his money in a poker game. Meanwhile, Olga inherits her Uncle Sven's fortune when he dies, but the will stipulates that she will receive the money only if she marries before her next birthday. She marries Gordon to get him out of debt but he spurns her affections because he thinks that she is socially inferior. They soon separate, and she goes out West where she falls into the clutches of nefarious fortune hunters who say that they will make a lady of her. Gordon returns to school and later, when she has become a "lady," they meet again. Through a misunderstanding they quarrel, but eventually Gordon realizes that she is being used by criminals and he saves her, after which they start their marriage over.

The green-eyed monster takes hold of Homer Withington, a successful businessman due to his judicious use of intellect in business and a lack of it in his role as a husband. As a result, his wife, Helen, suffers a terrible existence fueled by jealous fears, and their young daughter Beatrice lives amidst turmoil and suspicion.

Millionaire Billy Carrington is informed by his doctor that he has a terminal illness and only four months to live.

Reporter Jane Randall, who works for the Herald and Phil Norton of the Times, are competing to get the story on the Thomas Syndicate regarding when funds will be released to prevent a panic. Both head to the estate of Marsden Thomas who oversees the Syndicate. Through coercion Norton worms the info from Marsden’s son but attempts to hold up the report to do some insider trading. However, Jane with the help of her fiancé Jimmy telegraphs the Herald, gets the scoop and thwarts Nelson.

Ralph Cullom is in love with Lucy Bronson and she loves him, but her mother wants him to marry a title. Earl Twombley arrives in America on a business mission. He brings letters of introduction to Mrs. Belknap, Lucy's aunt. Lucy's mother sees an opportunity to arrange a union between Lucy and the Earl.

Richard Chester, a bachelor who has lost everything in a poker game, blunders into the apartment of Nora Ellis, who has just inherited a fortune under the stipulation that she marry immediately. Assuming the name Chester Dick, Richard marries Nora and leaves. Upon learning of his scheme, Richard ruins Charles. Nora falls in love with Richard, not recognizing her benefactor as her husband of an evening. Hoping to spoil Richard's chances with Nora, Charles tells her that Richard is already married and that he carries his wife's picture in his pocket. To her surprise and delight, Nora discovers that the incriminating picture is her own photograph and that Richard is already her husband.

Paul intends to skip out, but Patricia persuades him to stay. When Kenneth Winster steals the purse money and abducts Patricia, Paul knocks out his opponent, chases Winster, recovers the money, saves Patricia, and wins his father's respect.

In Hell's Valley, Texas Ranger Captain Wally kills Jose Valdez, leading Jose's brothers, Carlos and Manuel, to seek revenge at the Flores ranch. Wally is wounded pursuing them but is saved by Rosita Flores, his original sweetheart's daughter, who nurses him but secretly seeks his torture for her father, and also for herself. Carlos and Manuel fall for Rosita, but she, in turn, falls for Wally, leading to Carlos accidentally killing Manuel and Don Flores killing Carlos, with Wally and Rosita's relationship solidified.

Due to a misunderstanding, and the vicious streak of her relative David Boyd, Martha Queed is believed to be involved in an illicit affair with Arnold Barry. Her small-minded father, Marvin, insists they marry but the following morning when David is found murdered Arnold is suspected. As sentencing approaches a series of events materialize to prove his innocence.

A Wall Street financier fed up with the city drives to the old country homestead where he was born and takes a walk through the orchard. Full of memories he joins in a baseball game with some youngsters during which he sees his boyhood sweetheart passing. Recognizing each other they stroll off together down the rustic lane happy in each other’s company once more.

Henry Lamont, a wealthy miner, is mysteriously murdered. Trooper Joe Hammond, in the neighborhood, hears the shot and comes to the aid of Jeanne Lamont, who is at loss to explain the fatal attack on her father. The girl goes to live with her uncle, who has already been visited by a bogus trooper, who imparts the information that one of the Northwest Police is suspected of being 'the lone wolf,' a desperate criminal. Trooper Hammond, too, seeks 'the wolf.' Developments disclose that the bogus trooper was 'the wolf,' but not until the latter tries to file claim on a gold vein he is detected by the girl.

A writer, Rolin, takes up residence at the deserted Holly House, once the home of the disgraced Lord Sylvester. Lady Sylvester returns, ill, with a companion, Stephanie, whom everyone, including Rolin, believes to be her daughter. Rolin falls for Stephanie and completes his novel under this assumption. Lord Sylvester reappears, briefly embracing Stephanie as his child, but casts her out when she confesses she is only a companion. Undeterred, Rolin declares his love and vows to always see her as "my Lady Stephanie."

Minta, a mistreated orphan, escapes her abusive situation at a junk store after being caught reading and takes up playing the accordion, becoming known as "The Little Troubadour". In time she finds a new happy home and the love of a kind young man.

Bruce Blake, a wealthy and irresponsible playboy, finds himself in trouble after proposing to a dancer and then fleeing to the country under his valet's name, only to find the dancer dead and himself implicated in her murder. He falls for a dairy maid, but the police arrive to arrest him for the murder. Just as he is about to be arrested, news breaks that the dancer died of natural causes, and the case is dropped. Bruce then discovers his dairy maid is actually a millionaire's daughter seeking love for herself.

Jessie Ridgley desires more opportunities than her small-town life with her blind mother and protective father offers. Jessie feels misunderstood and yearns for the city, while her father tries to keep her at home. Her mother, sensing the tension, realizes she couldn't survive without her daughter.

Magda (Young) rebels against the harsh treatment she receives from her stern father (Edward Kimball). She ultimately escapes from home with aspirations to become a singer. She is betrayed by Kellner (Edward Fielding), a friend of the family, but she also becomes a great success.
