Screening as part of Black Sunday Film Festival. We follow a group of teens intent on exploring the ruins of an abandoned water park which burned down 15 years earlier. What they don’t expect to find are the Terror Twins, who hunt them one by one. This film delivers on every level. From the cold open we get great characters, bursts of humour and insane kills that any fan of the genre would be cheering for. It’s clear to see real-life experiences shaped this film in many ways, with the Death Loop being based on the infamous Cannonball Loop in Action Park in New Jersey, which was known for taking teeth! The diverse array of characters plays well against the high energy tone of this film. We have the stereotypes (final girl, ditsy blonde, jock, sassy best friend and the unlikeable ex), but these are perfect additions to the crazy narrative. In addition, we have a gang of outlaw bikers, intent on stealing the group’s RV – it doesn’t get more Americana than that! The real stars of this show are the feral Terror Twins, Otto and Emil, played by Kyle and Bodhi Schulz, who you’ll recognise from American Horror Story. They’re equal parts sadistic and childlike in nature, with a likeability you just can’t deny. Their look is iconic and one I cannot wait to see across horror conventions in the future. With a shooting schedule of just 15 days, this independent production is remarkably impressive. The level of practical effects which were dependent on a solo take are impactful and used to great effect with an abundance of memorable kills. As a metal fan I loved the score too which was composed by none other than Alex Skolnick of Testament. Spending time on set to get a feel of the film’s tone really helped to create an effective score that adds to the world building of this film. Fans of gory, action-packed horrors packed full of genuine, laugh out loud moments are going to love this!
