After a thirty-year-plus hiatus, Todd Rundgren's Utopia graced the Chicago Theater stage, with the hopes of promising fans an extraordinary, other-worldly concert experience. In the 1990s Todd retired Utopia and reverted to making his own music, with varying degrees of success, and then last year came the announcement of the long-awaited U.S. reunion tour, where the album in review here originates. The turbulent orchestra brings Siegmund, Wotan's earthly son, into the home of his vicious enemy, Hunding, whose wife Sieglinde turns out to be Siegmund's newfound lover and twin sister. The gods meddle in their showdown battle, with Wotan bowing to his wife Fricka's demand that he uphold the sanctity of marriage by allowing Hunding to win. Wotan's favorite daughter, Brunnhilde, sides with Siegmund, earning Wotan's unbridled anger. She manages to shelter the now-pregnant Sieglinde, though, before being banished forever from Valhalla to a mountaintop ringed by fire. Like its predecessor, producer Harry Kupfer's Barcelona production of Die Walküre is spare and symbolic.

Rehearsals begin and Aster soon realizes she may be in over her head. Even with help from her cast mates including Danica, the ultimate triple threat, and Corey, her love interest in the show (and maybe outside of it too), Aster cant seem to make Rodney happy. Things only get worse as the show loses investors, the sets and costumes are trapped on a boat, and Aster accidentally pushes Corey off the stage.

This live album was recorded at a performance at the Rainbow Club in Milan, Italy in November 1998. The line-up features original Mayhem vocalist Maniac, plus Hellhammer on drums, Necrobutcher on bass & Blasphemer on guitar. The show also features a guest appearance by now-current Mayhem vocalist Attila Csihar on the track ‘From the Dark Past’. With a crystal clear sound & the noticeably stunning drum work of Hellhammer, the band themselves considered this worthy of being labelled an official release, as Mayhem storm through a strong set full of classics from old releases ‘Deathcrush’ & ‘De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas’, to the post-Euronymous compositions as featured on ‘Wolf’s Lair Abyss’. Expect nothing but dark & chaotic black metal carnage.
