The Man Who Never Came Home

Starting in 1970s Hokkaido, the film charts the moral descent of Detective Moroboshi over three decades, the young cop quickly gets a bit too cozy with the other side of the law when his senior colleague Murai teaches him the ropes and ruts of the police business. Soon, he swaggers and rants through the streets of Sapporo a lean, mean, sex‐crazy bully, indistinguishable from a yakuza.

Ito plays the role of Makimura, the police detective who was in charge of investigating the serial murders but failed to catch the cunning murderer and his respected superior ended up being killed as well. 22 years later in 2017 when the case is nearing its statute of limitations, a man named Sonezaki claims to be the culprit for the 1995 murders and even publishes a book titled "Watashi ga satsujinhan desu" to talk about the cases. Despite the disgust towards Sonezaki's actions, the intensive attention showered on him via the media and SNS makes him become the talk of town.

Fukuyama plays the extremely unique protagonist Kamio Takeshi, who has outstanding magic that has made him famous in Las Vegas and a skillful ability to observe people, but is also strict with money and lies as easily as he breathes. The entire dialogue is extracted from the original work (narration is not used), although it is greatly abbreviated in order to make it a short film. However, with the exception of switching to a relatively realistic screen for the recollections that accompany the dialogue, almost the entire film takes place in a space within or around a single tatami room, as in a rehearsal (reading) of a play. The clothing is an exaggerated representation of the character attributes of the original story. Sakiyo's mask is a headgear that is an exact copy of the head of the actor who plays him, and is simply made unusually large so that it is recognisable as a mask.

In the second installment of the Death Note film franchise, Light Yagami meets a second Kira and faithful follower Misa Amane and her Shinigami named Rem.
