April 1945, amidst the Battle of Berlin, the final days of World War II begin. Young German soldiers fight desperately in the city's ruins. Between bombs, battles, and the stalemate, they question why they must continue fighting. This historical short film depicts the emotional and psychological collapse of a failing regime—intense, powerful, and relentlessly realistic.

Johanna Dohnal, whose political career spans three decades, was one of the very first explicitly feminist politicians in Europe. As a member of the Austrian socialist government and the first Austrian minister for Women’s Affairs from 1990 to 1994, Dohnal was responsible for founding Austria’s first women’s refuge as well as criminalizing of marital rape. Yet her legacy remains yet to be discovered and re-examined. DIE DOHNAL makes a first step, and it makes Dohnal come alive.

Before World War II the 3 sisters Mia, Uschi, and Martha were born in the former German city of Wrocław, which became Polish in 1945. They have been shaped by poverty, National Socialism, war, and escape, but also by peace, reconstruction, and an affluent society of Germany. The detailed stories they tell us in front of the camera, 75 years after World War II has ended, are as individual as the 3 sisters themselves.

In the polyphony of voices, a search for home unfolds. What is home? What is its purpose? Is there anything bigger than home? What are the sounds, colours, and smells that let it live in our memory? The collective and the individual is expressed through the voices of those who lost it in the Russian war in Ukraine. Associations, memories, meanings: four letters, four hundred things between them — home.
