Overview

Romeo & Juliet is a play set in Verona at the height of summer, where two young people meet at a party and fall into a love that is equal parts thrilling and all-consuming — a love that feels impossible to resist. But between them lies a tense history of warring families, violence, and political hostility that will prevent them from loving each other freely. What begins as a story of innocent young love quickly spirals into a tragedy shaped not only by its passion but also by the failures of those around them. This reimagining is directed by Robert Icke, whose work is known for its intensity and its striking understanding of how to bring a contemporary edge to a beloved classic text. Icke returns to Romeo & Juliet after his earlier production of the play, staging Shakespeare’s most riveting love story with a set of fresh eyes at the Harold Pinter Theatre.
