Brazilian badlands, April 1910. Tonho is ordered by his father to avenge the death of his older brother. Hofreiter, who has a relationship with Natter's wife Adele, confronts Natter after the latter launches a newspaper advertisement linking the suicide of an admirer of Hofreiter's wife to Hofreiter himself. In his tried and tested manner, Hofreiter challenges his vis-a-vis to a duel, but contrary to all etiquette, Natter refuses and exposes Hofreiter's system of vain notions of honor by confronting him with "genuine feeling". Natter: "I am hopelessly in love with my wife. That happens, dear Hofreiter. Nothing helps. That's just the way it is." His revenge is of a different nature, because he gets out of Hofreiter's narcissistic game and disavows his deceptive maneuvers and strategies of shifting blame.

The film is showcasing the discrimination and violence faced by Ezidi Kurds (Yazidis) due to their religion, in a symbolic event which took place between primary school children in Turkish part of Mesopotamia. This fiction film is inspired by true events in the region, performed by 39 local Kurdish children of Hasankeyf villages and shooted in Hasankeyf, an ancient city, which is planned to go under water in 2017 by Ilisu Hydroelectric Dam.

The plot centers on students involved in the Soweto Riots, in opposition to the implementation of Afrikaans as the language of instruction in schools. The stage version presents a school uprising similar to the Soweto uprising on June 16, 1976. A narrator introduces several characters among them the school girl activist Sarafina. Things get out of control when a policeman shoots several pupils in a classroom. Nevertheless, the musical ends with a cheerful farewell show of pupils leaving school, which takes most of act two. In the movie version Sarafina feels shame at her mother's (played by Miriam Makeba in the film) acceptance of her role as domestic servant in a white household in apartheid South Africa, and inspires her peers to rise up in protest, especially after her inspirational teacher, Mary Masombuka (played by Whoopi Goldberg in the film version) is imprisoned.

Sonja's captain serves in the Russian army, and Sonja has a relationship with Baron von Lichtenstein, who exploits Sonja who spies on Russia using Jew Isaac as her messenger.

In summer 2025, the Van Drayens gathers at their secluded estate, The Château, for their annual family dinner. But as the patriarch reveals the contents of his will, simmering tensions erupt, threatening to tear the family apart.
