The First Night

Whether for neurotypical or autistic people, love doesn't have a unique way of expressing itself. There is no typical love. Relationships and romantic love are challenging for everyone. For autistics, then, the matter can gain other layers of complexity. Or is it not? Marcos Maia and Sophia Mendonça mediate this dialogue, with great guests.

This short films collection deals with coming of age which describes the process of maturing from youth to adult. The unrest and conflicts that go hand in hand with this difficult time are reflected in a wide variety of topics. Deep intimate situations alternate with deliciously funny moments. In "Beautiful Alexander", the insecure teenager's dilemma is revealed: does he dare to go one step further and approach his idol Ivan on the beach? In a run-down part of Madrid, Paco and José in "Cuban Heel Shoes" have to take care that no one finds out about their love affair. Claudio is 15 and wants to belong to the clique in "J'ador", he admires the 18 year old leader Lauro. If he wants to belong he needs to grow up. "Mani" is 12 and trying to come to terms with his burgeoning puberty/sexuality. He discovers that his mother is having an affair with the family driver. In "My Brother", the brothers Umberto and Stefano have to share a room, with the elder Umberto being forced to look after his younger brother, who constantly seeks contact and affection.

Girls boarding school in the remote Scottish Highlands, 1986. Reg is a lonely 15 year old girl, who stares longingly out of her dorm window at the chainsaw wielding tree surgeon working in the school grounds. Reg and her classmates have to take part in a self defense exercise - The Attack Test. Alone, Reg must walk through the woods until she is attacked by her masked teacher, Mike, at which point she must defend herself using force. This is intended as real life preparation for these privileged and inexperienced women living in an isolated world where rape paranoia was rife. Full of trepidation, Reg walks into the woods where Mike is waiting, but the test does not go according to plan.

This 20th anniversary production of Jonathan Harvey's play about two working class teenage boys falling in love on a south east London council estate was captured by Digital Theatre live at the Arts Theatre in London's Leicester Square.

Coup de cœur

As every year, the Los Pinos school, a prestigious school of the confessional type, sends its students on retreat to the countryside. Under the watchful eye of teachers and priests, the children are led on the path of their physical and moral development. Through the gaze of several middle and upper class teenagers, the film shows how their upbringing affects the future of society itself.

Although Dave (LeVar Burton) and his family are poor sharecroppers in the Deep South in the 1930s, this 15-year-old's problem is shared by teenagers today: he stands with one foot in adulthood and the other in childhood.
