After the Germans flooded large parts of The Netherlands towards the end of WWII, the Brouwer family find themselves trapped in their attic surrounded by water. With their rations dwindling, tensions arise within the household.

Two white explorers, American Tom Dawes and Scotsman Sandy Kemp, travel to the Dyak villages of Borneo, where they hear stories of a primitive, remote tribe, that is ruled by a "white goddess." Intrigued, Tom and Sandy travel upriver to the village and are captured by the hostile tribesmen. Because they have entered a sacred place, the men are sentenced to death, but are saved when they hear a woman's voice say that they are to be made blood brothers of the Dyaks.

A beautiful and poetic at the same time difficult and tragic story. In the distant mountain village in Herzegovina, shortly after the end of World War II, lonely women and children await the return of men from the front. The few men that remained in the village trying to go to America and find the salvation of the lumber and stone. Center of the story is loneliness and anticipation. This is a tragic story of two men whose fight for the heart of a woman cost the head of both.
