Paris, France, 1482. Frollo, Chief Justice of benevolent King Louis XI, gets infatuated by the beauty of Esmeralda, a young Romani girl. With few words, but through ivy vines, flowing piano music, singing, and drawings, it describes the feeling of being different, the self-hatred that can come with it, and the eventual acceptance of one’s own individuality.
