Reviews
Tribute to classic noir pictures, this is a quirky blend of detective mystery and self-aware comedy. Weary P.I. Mitchum, perfectly cast, is contacted by wily Borgnine, an ex-con, who wants his help in handing over a ransom for his kidnapped granddaughter. Mitchum muses that the situation is similar to a scene in “Farewell, My Lovely” (which he had starred in). So he prepared when he is bamboozled and used before being threatened by fierce Lethem, then coerced deeper into criminal dealings. A post-climax at the L.A. Coliseum is amusing and disarming. Delightful to see the veteran cast, as Mitchum is joined by his brother John and son Jim. A selection of former glamour girls doesn't hurt.
