As the only surviving member of her family, deaf guitarist Kaya is sent deep into the forest to hide and learn the mysterious melody passed down through generations. In order to survive the mercenaries assigned to kill her, she must learn to play the tune to awaken a mythological power from another realm.

The story is set at the beginning of the 20th century in Sicily. Salvatore, a very poor farmer, and a widower, decides to emigrate to the US with all his family, including his old mother. Before they embark, they meet Lucy. She is supposed to be a British lady and wants to come back to the States. Lucy, or Luce as Salvatore calls her, for unknown reasons wants to marry someone before to arrive to Ellis Island in New York. Salvatore accepts the proposal. Once they arrive in Ellis Island they spend the quarantine period trying to pass the examinations to be admitted to the States. Tests are not so simple for poor farmers coming from Sicily. Their destiny is in the hands of the custom officers.

Tetsuo Togami is in the 2nd grade of high school. Due to a fight, he is hospitalized. There, he meets Maiko Takashiro. She has an incurable disease. She also has a hearing disability and is unable to talk. At first, Tetsuo becomes embarrassed but begins exchanging text messages with Maiko. Through the text messages, he begins having feelings for her. Even after his discharge from the hospital, he goes to visit Maiko every day. They promise to go out together on Maiko's birthday, but her condition worsens.

On the eve of a catastrophic event which will wipe out the hearing population, we follow four deaf characters as they go about their daily lives.

Eleven-year-old petty criminal Maroa lives with her violent grandmother Brigida in Caracas. At the end of the night, Emilie declines Gabriel's offer of "a kiss without consequences". Emilie admonishes him that the kiss could have unexpected consequences, and tells him a story, unfolding in flashbacks, about the impossibility of indulging your desires without affecting someone else's life.
