During the Allied invasion of Italy in World War II, six stories unfold in various regions, from Sicily to the northern Po Valley. These tales follow the interactions between American soldiers and Italian civilians as they navigate their way through language barriers and cultural differences.

He resolves to keep his hands off but can't seem to stay away, and she's eager for a lover who's a father figure.

Giulia has a one-night stand with a stranger to forget a heartbreak. Aimlessly walking through October city streets to let off steam, she meets a woman who came from Turin seeking an explanation from her partner, who doesn't even want to see her. The two join forces and settle accounts with him. Neither of them feels like going home and being alone, so they spend the whole night wandering around Milan.

When Lucy Honeychurch and chaperon Charlotte Bartlett find themselves in Florence with rooms without views, fellow guests Mr Emerson and son George step in to remedy the situation. Meeting the Emersons could change Lucy's life forever but, once back in England, how will her experiences in Tuscany affect her marriage plans?

He is also introduced to a blind scholar named Bardo de' Bardi, and his daughter Romola. As Tito becomes settled in Florence, assisting Bardo with classical studies, he falls in love with Romola.

Four thirtysomething college students share a flat in Florence: Leonardo pursues beautiful Letizia, Rocco moonlights as a night watchman, Bruno needs to graduate to inherit his father-in-law's business, and Pino dreams of becoming a stand-up comedian.

In the early part of this century, Maddelena a teenage Italian girl, is attacked whilst walking in the woods. The attack leaves her mentally scarred and our story flashes forward to the 1940s where Maddelena is still troubled. She disappears one day and her daughter vows to find her.

An industrialist and a pianist meet on a trip and fall in love. Through a quirk of fate, they are reported dead in a crash though they weren't on the plane. This gives them the opportunity to live together free from their previous lives. Unfortunately, this artificial arrangement leads to greater and greater stress. Eventually the situation collapses when they come to pursue their original, individual interests without choosing a common path.

Florence, Italy, 1925, during the fascist dictatorship. In order to live near his girlfriend Bianca, young Mario moves to a humble street in the old city center, where he befriends Maciste and Ugo, two anti-fascists.
