American Hero

From zero to superhero

Action Comedy Science Fiction

Overview

Melvin, a reluctant hero who is far from super, has been suppressing his telekinetic powers for years with booze, drugs, and women. In the process, he has failed at practically everything, most of all as a parent to his son. After a brush with death, Melvin decides to use his powers for good and clean up the streets of New Orleans with the help of his best friend/definitely-not-a-sidekick, Lucille. For a man who can do the impossible, it might be a fight even he can’t win.

Good watch, could watch again, and can recommend. I can recommend this, but I feel like it needs a caveat for being a "Super Hero" movie where the "Super Hero" is a drug addict. It's like one step past the line that "Hancock" danced around. The other big caveat is that it is shot "found footage" / "fakumentary" style, he literally does 4th wall breaks to a cameraman that couldn't possibly be there unless it's like "Chronicle" where he's floating the camera, which would also be impossible in some cases. And none of it cute like in "Deadpool". The movie itself is actually pretty entertaining, the characters are mostly funny, there is good action, and the writing is pretty nuanced with a good gradual build up in not only the story, but the character development.
