A small group of men lead by a woman reside in an old castle and kidnap women they believe are "loose" subjecting them to medieval tortures. One day they kidnap two women who happen to be real witches.

As the trio approach Katrina's apartment, Sarah can only watch in fear as William becomes more physically possessive of Katrina.

Göldi was arrested and under torture, admitted to entering in a pact with the Devil, who had appeared to her as a black dog. She withdrew her confession after the torture ended, but was sentenced on June 18, 1782 to execution by decapitation. The charges were officially of "poisoning" rather than witchcraft, even though the law at the time did not impose the death penalty for non-lethal poisoning.

Down at the docks a very enterprising but dangerous element is making life miserable for Sheriff Marga. But she is distracted by a series of puzzling kidnappings that is plaguing her parish.
