The Was

A compilation of the series of animated short films released by rock band Queens of the Stone Age to promote their 2013 album.

Caricature versions of George W. Bush and Colin Powell, each resembling nothing so much as a bobble head doll on a mission, rock out in a very funny send-up that manages to poke fun at the political powers that be, rock musicians of a certain ilk, and the music video genre itself.

Fanstory

A silent film was created from a scenario inspired by a single poem, and a studio album later emerged from the imagery of the film. The groundbreaking production traces the world of three characters—White Kiha, Black Kiha, and Pillow Monster while delivering a story of loss, transformation, and the circle of life.

Borrowing a beloved song from his own 1984 feature Sister Stella L., Mike De Leon made this video in a damning response to the victory election of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. as president of the Philippines. In a prepared statement at the Cannes premiere of his recently restored Itim, he wrote, “Horror has now acquired a more sinister meaning. It is no longer about a ghost but about the monsters of Philippine politics, monsters that, after a long wait in the subterranean caverns of hell, have returned to ravage and rape my country all over again. The crazy thing is that we invited them back.”

After fifteen years of unconventionally kinetic stage antics (sometimes involving fire breathing, on-stage raffles, and a guy named "Dirty" who was essentially the band's resident cheerleader), the band gave their bittersweet farewell performance for an army of costume-clad fans - some of which even flew in from other countries - on their favorite day of the year to perform, Halloween. And here you have it, the band's final live performance from San Diego's Westin Hotel Ballroom, marking the end of an era and the affirmation of their cemented presence in the slightly emptier world of rock n' roll. Real Life, Music, Television is a trilogy of music videos which examine the hyper-self-consciousness of adolescents. The images from "Performance" are derived from found footage of an 8th grade talent show and are combined with a list of gender-specific transformative sexual memories from the age of 4-18. "Ladies, There's a Space You Can't Go" is a deconstruction and a distortion of an episode of Sally Jesse Raphael titled "My Daughter Dresses Like A Hooker." "Talent Show" is derived from the same found footage as "Performance." The young boys lip-synch to a bubble gum rock song as they attempt to publicly assert their new-found sexual power.

The protagonist is relentlessly hunted by a squad of black-suited mercenaries across buildings, rooftops, snowy mountains, and a decommissioned airplane, all while trying to recover a strange device. The short film went viral, racking up over 150 million views online, and inspired the 2015 full-length first-person action feature film, Hardcore Henry.

The story begins in a bleak, post-apocalyptic setting with Ji-hye and Tae-jun, who are injured and on the run. They encounter a seemingly abandoned building filled with discarded clothing and, in the process, find a camcorder. By peeking into the camcorder, they enter a world of happy memories and a life where they are not burdened by their disabilities.
