A long time ago in the world of Fairy tales, there was a little boy who lived in a country where quarrels, fights, rage and anger were forbidden, and knight were not needed any more. The little boy was sorry about this because he wanted to become a noble knight. He travels to three different countries where he gets books, cakes and a ride on a roundabout. But nobody can teach him how to fight. Suddenly, in the middle of the forrest, he faces a huge dragon. He wins the fight, and when he comes home, the king's personal physician has seized power, and nobody dares to protest. However, the little knight does, and he wins the fight agains the physician, marries the princess and lives happily ever after.

Five-year-old Peter and his older brother Hans drop the Christmas present for their parents in the middle of the road and it gets flattened by a car. Deeply distressed, they go to a Christmas fair and buy a lottery ticket with their remaining money. To their delight, they win a washing machine! Peter is especially excited when Santa Claus shows up and promises to transport the machine for him, but the old man instead vanishes with the boys' gift. Hans is convinced that Peter has been conned and chases after the fleeing Santa. But Peter simply cannot believe that Santa Claus could be anything other than kind and helpful.

The youngest of the miller's three sons sits sadly in front of his cabin while his brothers inherit their father's mill and donkey, and all he'd gotten was an old tomcat. But what he did not know: it was a quite gifted tomcat. A tomcat that can speak and walk like a human on two legs!

The second television adaptation of Once Upon a Mattress was broadcast on December 12, 1972, on CBS. This production, videotaped in color, included original Broadway cast members Burnett, Gilford and White, and also featured Bernadette Peters as Lady Larken, Ken Berry as Prince Dauntless, Ron Husmann as Harry, and Wally Cox as The Jester. It was directed by Ron Field and Dave Powers. Again, several songs were eliminated and characters were combined or altered. Since the parts of the Minstrel and the Wizard were cut from this adaptation, a new prologue was written with Burnett singing "Many Moons Ago" as a bedtime story.

The first partly colored German fairy tale film directed by Fritz Genschow. The film has a frame story shot in black and white and a middle section in color that tells the story of Little Red Riding Hood, who is sent by her mother to her grandmother with cake and wine. On the way there, it passes through the dark forest. She meets the wicked wolf, to whom she reveals the location of her grandmother's house. The wolf rushes to her grandmother's house, eats her whole, puts on her hood and lies down in bed. When Little Red Riding Hood arrives, he eats her too. The "Uncle Hunter" appears as a rescuer in uniform and frees them both from the wolf's belly.

They only agree on one thing—they both want to defy the king's promise. But how?
