At the turn of the century on Prince Edward Island, Matthew Cuthbert and his sister Marilla decide to take on an orphan boy as help for their farm. But they get an unexpected jolt when they're mistakenly sent a girl instead: Anne Shirley.

Psychotherapist Fred Czerny is finding it difficult to retire. So he shares his busy practice in Munich with Ted Fröhlich, an advocate of modern, holistic therapy methods. In 1974, after having murdered several young women, he leaves Seattle for Utah, where he is a law student and where other girls disappear. Bundy is tried in the media and his good-boy attitude brings him sympathy but also the hatred of many.
