Overview

The film is set in the 1930s during the Great Depression in the United States. Young Eugene Evans (Finn Cole) also suffered from the economic crisis: his family is barely making ends meet, and his stepfather is pressuring him about getting a job. Eugene dreams of escaping his family farm in Texas and finds an injured bank robber Allison Wells (Margot Robbie). The police are offering cash rewards for the capture of the robber. The girl seems like the perfect solution to all Eugene’s problems and a chance to finally get on his feet. But when Eugene discovers the seductive fugitive bank robber in his own barn, something goes wrong.

Being obsessed with detective books, Eugene finds himself in a similar situation. Now the young man realizes that he does not need money at all, but rather a new, completely different life. While helping Allison to survive, he dreams of a joint future with her. Now they are trying to achieve their common goal together, facing endless troubles, but it seems like they are moving in the right direction.

For Allison, Eugene is an opportunity to be saved and a chance to once again feel human closeness, while for Eugene, the girl becomes the personification of a cruel adult life. It is in trouble with Allison that the young man learns to take responsibility in life, make a choice between people dear to him, and accept the truth about his father.

Dreamland could have been a gripping gangster action movie, but the director had different goals. We are faced with an eerie picture of a total financial collapse that has turned a prosperous country into a scorched desert.

Dreamland is a sensual interweaving of two destinies, which in one way or another, felt the taste of their own dreamland. After all, this is the story of first love and sudden growing up against the backdrop of one of the darkest pages of American history.
