Overview

The film follows the singer Helen Reddy, who flew to New York in 1966 with her three-year-old daughter, a suitcase, and $230 in her pocket. A few weeks later, she didn't have a penny left. After a few months, she fell in love. Five years later, she became one of the biggest stars of the time and a symbol of the 1970s women's movement. Helen wrote the song “I Am Woman,” which inspired a whole generation of women to fight for their rights.

I Am Woman is a lightweight biopic covering 20 years of the life of a famous singer and feminist icon, performed by Tilda Cobham-Hervey, with Evan Peters as her husband/manager Jeff Wald. The movie is a bold tribute to the singer who has recently passed away. Reddy was a defiant woman who produced hit after hit and challenged an industry that defined her art as “housewife rock.” Even though her career was undervalued and the music was considered unfashionable at the time, the power of Helen’s music resonated with millions of women back in the 70s and still empowers many nowadays.

I Am Woman ends by reminding viewers that Reddy is still here with us, offering a chance to celebrate what this iconic woman accomplished. For those who love her songs, the film is a nostalgic excuse to sing them one more time. And if you're too young to have heard them, this is a sign that you might need to call your mother.
