The Bugle Call

Marie is kidnapped and held for ransom. John, one of the crooks, rescues her at great risk to himself. Later, when she is safely returned to her parents and her fiancé, Roy, they see a man hurt in the park. It proves to be John. Marie recognizes him and takes him home. He becomes a servant in the family. They are giving a reception. John is serving the guests. He finds a note pushed into his hand as he stands before the curtained window. It says that unless he hands over a gem, which is displayed among the wedding presents, the crooks will get him. He tries to steal the jewel, but Marie prevents it. She then causes the arrest of the crooks who are waiting to receive the jewel.

Dr. Spencer sends Lester Jordon to spend a few months in Tennessee for a rest. The school trustees employ Ruth Overholt as teacher for the Sumach Crossroads School. The townspeople suspect Lester is a Revenue Officer and want to get rid of him. When Clem, a man who had argued with Lester is found shot in the woods the news spreads that Clem is responsible. He is carried to the town, with a rope about his neck, to be lynched. Ruth is frantic, but helpless until she can convince the townsfolk of his innocence. Lester is released and with Ruth, he returns to civilization.

Laddie Ferguson arrives from overseas and gets work in a lumber camp in Nova Scotia. He becomes a rival with Ed Spencer for the hand of Mary, the foreman's daughter. Spencer is turned down and he calls a strike. Laddie calls upon the Cape Breton Highlanders, camped nearby, for assistance and they go to the camp and break up the strike, which clears the way for a happy future for Mary and Laddie.

Fighting the invasion of their small New England town by a big city--type nightclub, the Jazzland, a young newspaperman and his brother endeavor to learn the identity of the club's owner...

Zelda Dunbar, a detective, on the trail of two notorious blackmailers, offers herself as their accomplice and is accepted by Eldridge and Mortimer. Zelda wins the heart of Kendrick, a rich bachelor. Zelda slips Kendrick a note saying her father is going to force her to marry a man she does not love. Kendrick takes the girl into another state.

Mary Alden and her brothers Matthew and George have extremely different political views. Matthew is a committed pacifist, and is constantly giving speeches against war. George is notified that his draft number, 258, has been called and to report for induction, but he refuses. Mary, on the other hand, is intensely patriotic and comes up with a plan to shame him into reporting for induction. Meanwhile, Matthew is being set up for a patsy by a gang of German secret agents, led by Van Bierman, who are planning to blow up an airplane factory.

Clorinda Wildairs breaks off an affair with the unscrupulous Sir John Ozen to become engaged to a rich nobleman, Mertoun, the Duke of Osmonde. Clorinda accidentally kills Sir John when he, infuriated by her forthcoming marriage, threatens to blackmail her. She buries the body in the cellar and admits her act to the forgiving Osmonde before marrying him.

Alick Wylie agrees to give railroad porter John Shand $300 to help him secure his education and political ambitions on condition that his daughter Maggie has the option of marrying him within five years. Though not in love they marry, and John becomes successful, thanks to Maggie’s input on his speeches, in time being elected to Parliament. Eventually John strays with Lady Sybil and Maggie diplomatically arranges for them to be together. However his next speech without her assistance is a failure and Sybil leaves him out of boredom, it’s then he sees Maggie’s true worth.

Lewis Dumont, a Northern officer in the American Civil War, works undercover behind Confederate lines in an attempt to lead Southern forces away from an area in which a Northern attack is planned. But Dumont falls in love with a Southern girl and when she proves useful to his plan, his conscience begins to tear at him.

The vengeful Umballah, having delivered his three bags of silver and secured Col. Hare as his prisoner, departs for the Palace of Allah, leaving Kathlyn and Bruce tied to the tiger cart with their backs to the savage beast and facing another death, at the hands of the brutal brigands.

Billy Garfield is a bright, young railroad engineer. He runs passenger train No. 6, and next to his locomotive, he loves Marie Shaw. They are engaged and their wedding day is set, but Jack Blake, Billy's fireman on the run, and a former suitor for Marie's hand, is jealous and plots to "fix" Billy.

Kathlyn's sister, Winnie, has been cowed and terrorized, is forcibly crowned Queen of Allaha, to serve the sinister purpose of the scheming Umballah.

Kathlyn and her sister, Winnie, have hardly disappeared through the trap leading from the big animal cage to the tunnel that had been burrowed beneath, than the hungry and frenzied lions that were in the arena swarmed onto the stage and began clawing at the trap, excited to ferocity by the fresh scent of human beings.

Fast following the death of the King of Allaha, Prince Umballah, dethroned by the revolution, manages to reinstate himself and orders Kathlyn and her father brought to the palace in order that one of them may be made the reigning sovereign.

Billy Garrison, a successful young jockey, rides the favorite "Sis" in the Louisville Derby. He does not ride with his customary vigor and dash. He feels "doped" and entirely out of condition and as a consequence "Sis," instead of winning the race, trails in last under the wire. At the stables he is accused of throwing the race, but denies it.

Sally Brent, a pretty laundry girl, believes in palmistry and is told by a charlatan that the man who affects purple as his colors is her affinity and soul mate. She is loved by Dan Maguire, driver of the laundry wagon, but he is very fond of red, which causes Sally much grief as she thinks a lot of Dan. One day she does up a bundle of shirts in which the color purple predominates. She writes a message on one of the cuffs, calling the owner her "soul mate."
