In the play, the author showed how property had taken over the entire thinking and actions of the farmer Palčík and his wife Mary. They persuaded the poor Ľavkovs to give them their son Ďurek as their own and marry him to Zuzka, with the understanding that they would transfer all the property to them after their death.
