With their parents' approval, the two decide to get married but their plans are thwarted by Japanese lieutenant Herng-shan who has set his eyes on Shiow-lan. Herng-shan drafts Charng-rong and sends him to war in Southeast Asia where almost certain death awaits.

Based on Graham Greene's novel Stamboul Train, the movie focuses on the lives of individuals aboard the Orient Express as it makes a three-day journey from Ostend to Constantinople.
