Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson meet as boys in an English Boarding school. Holmes is known for his deductive ability even as a youth, amazing his classmates with his abilities. When they discover a plot to murder a series of British business men by an Egyptian cult, they move to stop it.

John Cleese is hilarious as the descendant of Sherlock Holmes in this modern detective drama of international power politics and intrigue. Unlike his illustrious grandfather however, he only succeeds in bungling every job he organizes. Also stars Arthur Lowe as the "bionic" grandson of Dr. Watson, Stratford Johns as the Commissioner of Police, and Connie Booth as Mrs. Hudson.

At the end of the 19th century, the young mathematics professor William James Moriarty and his allies have decided to take on the British Empire in an effort to destroy the discriminatory class system and create an ideal country. Holmes and Dr. Watson take on the case of a beautiful woman whose husband has vanished. The investigation proves strange indeed, involving six missing midgets, villainous monks, a Scottish castle, the Loch Ness monster, and covert naval experiments.

Whitechapel, the slums of the East End in London, are being terrorized by a brutal serial killer called Jack the Ripper. While William James Moriarty receives a letter of request from his old teacher Jack Renfield, the Scotland Yard inspector Lestrade also seeks out Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson for help in this matter.

Arthur Conan Doyle reveals the story behind Sherlock Holmes and his mysteries by telling about Dr. Joseph Bell, from whom he drew his inspiration, after meeting him as a medical student in Edinburgh. This TV movie served as the pilot for the later released minisseries Murder Rooms: Mysteries of the Real Sherlock Holmes produced by the BBC. The series then picks up with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's time as a general practitioner in Southsea, solving mysteries with the help of his mentor, Dr Joseph Bell, who is still based in Edinburgh.

A burglar enters the home of a wealthy man and steals a valuable necklace. A reward of $500 is offered for the thief's apprehension. A couple of rube detectives start out to find the robber and succeed in taking into custody the victim of the robbery and the real detective who is on the case.

In the midst of World War II, Sherlock Holmes rescues the Swiss inventor of a new bomb-sight from the Gestapo and brings him to England, where he quickly falls into the clutches of the evil Professor Moriarty.
