Asa Hatch, a billionaire, receives a telegram from Anson Slade, supervisor of a Wyoming national forest, accepting a bribe that Hatch has offered to secure Slade's services to steal timber lands from the government. The plan is to locate the large holdings as estates, before adding adjacent public lands to the national forest.

Tom Whitney, well connected but a social derelict because of his weakness for drink, is released from the draft because of an old football Injury, but a policeman persuades him that he can still do his bit in the shipyards. He takes a job in the yard owned by the man to whose daughter he was engaged in happier times. Three German propagandists seek to foment a strike to delay the work, and largely through Tom's efforts the plan goes amiss and the strike is called off. Daisy's screams are heard by Morristette, a Mexican, who rushes in and intervenes. Smarting under the blow Soapy deals him, he gallops to town and informs the sheriff. On arriving at the shack to rescue his sweetheart Melton finds that Soapy Smith and the long-sought desperado. Black Jack, are one and the same.

A daughter of the slums has a little brother and makes a brave attempt to earn enough for both herself and Jimmy after her father is sent to jail on a fake charge trumped-up by "Nifty" Mendez, who is very anxious to get her in his toils. Betty escapes from the city and Nifty. On the road Jimmy is struck by Rodney Channing's motor. The injury is not serious but Jimmy must remain in Channing's home for some time. During the visit, love grows up between Channing and Betty, who is now of course very happy. But a newspaper announcement and the author send Nifty again into her life and simultaneously with his entrance comes the exit of happiness.

Although Billie Farrington's aunt, Mrs. Farrington, wishes her to marry Farrington ranch foreman Bob Hanford, Billie refuses to be interested in anyone but Count Venino, a fake nobleman. Mrs. Farrington becomes seriously ill, and Billie weds Bob to please her aunt but treats him with chilly reserve. When Mrs. Farrington learns of Venino's masquerade and his half-caste birth, she gives a reception to which she invites Venino's Burmese mother. Billie runs away, is kidnapped by Venino, and then is rescued by Bob, whose rugged honesty Billie finally appreciates.

There he joins Said, an old university friend who is the son of an Algerian sheik. Gillian follows, the servant is killed, and with him dies the spell, "The Shadow of the East."
