A Woman's Woman

Dick Tavish, a young New Yorker, decides that there is money in cows, and he buys a western ranch. When the novelty has worn off he decided there is monotony as well. Then he falls in love with a girl on a calendar, and life takes on a new interest, particularly after he discovers who the girl is. The fact that her uncle swindled him on the ranch does not matter. He figures he can take care of the uncle, and he does, but not until he has been forced to masquerade as a woman, and have half the men at a fashionable resort fall in love with him.

American heiress Bettina Vanderpoel departs for England to visit her sister Rosalie and her impoverished nobleman husband Sir Nigel Anstruthers. Arriving at their dilapidated estate, Betty finds that Nigel not only has wasted Rosalie's fortune but has treated his wife and their little son cruelly. Betty jumps into action promptly repairing the estate with her own money and seeking to offer some relief to her sister by introducing her into English society. In the process, she meets Lord Mount Dunstan, a proud but penniless nobleman who lives in the adjacent estate. Strongly attracted to Betty, he nonetheless avoids her so as not to appear a fortune hunter. When an epidemic breaks out among the farmers it leads to life changing consequences for both sisters and the men in their sphere.

Tired of her simple husband, Bella becomes involved with brutish Baroudi. To get rid of Nigel, she begins slowly poisoning him. However, Nigel's friend Dr. Isaacson arrives in time to save him. Now Baroudi wants nothing to do with Bella, and neither does her husband. Totally alone now, the distraught Bella wanders off into the desert.

Bruce Edwards returns to his hometown to take possession of his late father's estate, but Sam Willetts presents him with documentation proving that Mr. Edwards traded the estate for worthless swampland. Bruce takes a job in the village tavern and romances June Gordon, whose mother suspects Willetts of foul play. When Willets falsely accuses Bruce of theft, the young man escapes. Theda Bara plays Princess Zara, who lives on a South Sea Island. A handsome young missionary (William B. Davidson) arrives and there is a romance, which is hindered by various complications including a typhoon.

When Dorothy's Southern, aristocratic father Colonel Raleigh refuses to let her marry Forbes Stewart, a Northern gambler, the couple elopes. When Dorothy soon thereafter becomes pregnant, Forbes vows to reform, but authorities arrest him on a gambling charge, and he serves a year in prison. During that time, and just before the birth of the baby, a woman comes to Dorothy and claims to be Forbes' wife. Stunned, Dorothy returns to her father, but the colonel throws her out, and so, on her own, she has her baby, whom the community believes to be illegitimate. Convinced that she has sinned, Dorothy is about to kill herself when Forbes, just out of jail, finds her and explains that the other woman simply had been an ex-sweetheart trying to win him back.

Mary marries Claude, a rich playboy, to please her invalid mother who becomes ill before they leave for a South American honeymoon.

18-year-old Nancy Hawthorne, a young English girl is raised in seclusion by her artist father, but finally goes to Paris to study and meets Cornelia Evans, an American art student. At a party for Cornelia's brother Nancy meets Bob Whittaker and falls hard for him. They spend a weekend together at the beach, where their feelings for each other intensify, but Bob feels unworthy of her and contrives to be seen in an affectionate pose with another girl, Heloise, which demolishes Nancy's illusions. Heartbroken Nancy enlists as an ambulance driver at the outbreak of war eventually reuniting with Bob on the battlefields of France. They marry before his regiment leaves for the front.
