In 1899, Kansas farmer Wade Harkin and his wife Ruth pull up stakes and head for the Alaskan gold fields to make their fortune. When they reach Seattle, Washington, Wade tells Ruth to meet him aboard their ship going north, but when she arrives, she is unable to find him because he is involved in a private poker game.

Struggling to support their six children, John Moore and his wife accept a wealthy relative's offer to adopt one of them in exchange for a lifetime of comfort. However, after the father drives the oldest daughter away, the mother's immediate remorse prompts the father to turn around, joyfully reuniting the family.

This film is based on the Las Poquianchis case in Mexico where Delfina and María de Jesús González lured in young women with false help wanted ads. They would get the women addicted to drugs and put them to work as prostitutes. Once they became too ill, used up or stubborn, they would be killed. Customers may also be killed if it appeared to be profitable enough. When police officers searched the sisters' property they found 91 bodies.

She resigns herself to submitting to his advances in order to get the money in order to keep her brother alive. However, circumstances arise in which she may possibly get the money without having to debase herself with her boss.

The incidents of this story are some of those preceding and leading up to the Civil War in 1861 and the Declaration of Emancipation. The central figure in the drama is Uncle Tom, a slave initially in the possession of the Shelbys of Kentucky. A 1927 re-release of this film cut the original runtime in half, and in its extant, fragmentary state, it runs 14 minutes.

Popular actress Violet Ray endures an abusive, alcoholic husband, Jim, for the sake of their deceased child's memory. She finds solace in an innocent friendship with Mabel Wright, a 10-year-old florist's daughter who brings her violets daily. A persistent suitor, Alec Lang, urges Violet to leave Jim for him. After Mabel is hit by a car and hospitalized, her father delivers a final bunch of violets and a message to Violet. This act of devotion rekindles Violet's sense of duty and "wifely love," prompting her to reject Alec and commit to remaining true to her daughter's memory while at Mabel's bedside.

Wandering into a café he is seduced by Beauty as the other inmates of the place, Lust, Rum, Avarice and Passion dance around him. The proprietor enters; it is Mary. Recognizing the crucifix, she left with him as a baby she persuades him to go back without revealing her identity. After he becomes a priest Mary, now a bedraggled old woman enters his church. She recognizes him and just before she dies her son gives her absolution.
