An epic story set in the early western 1860s involving a working cowboy and a young Indian boy. As a child, Sandy Steele witnesses the death of his family at the hands of a brutal raiding Indian Party. Growing to manhood and working as a ranch foreman, Steele encounters the hand of fate when he is thrown together with Little Hawk, an Indian child whose family has just been killed by white men.

Almerian Dickinson, biggest land owner in the settlement of Gonzales, deeply in love with his wife Anne, warns Wharton that a bloody revolt would endanger every wife and mother in the colony. He proposes they send Austin to Mexico City to ask Santa Anna to grant Texans a voice in their own government.

Jeff foils the attempt and gets him to confess that Clay was the killer. With only old-timers Lafe and Bill to help, Jeff heads after Clay and his gang.
