During the annual Christmas gathering at the family home, the parents surprise their children by announcing their decision to move in with one of them and pass on the house.

Suddenly, it seems as though the only hope for Pettson lies in old stories that will jog his memory, such as the tale about Findus getting lost as a kitten and the one about Pettson and Findus embarking on a thrilling treasure hunt.

In a state of sinking curiosity, Mango forces their siblings into an impromptu, late-night meeting to discuss ridiculous and nonsensical scenarios as to where they originally came from, and comically banter with their conflicting ideas against the clock until they're sent to bed by their mother. The film's message revolves around "found family", and that no matter where you're from, your home is wherever you feel the most loved.

While there, Barney and the Backyard Gang tour the studio on their own, while producing their own show. From a cereal commercial set and a puppet show and the six little ducks and teddy bears and the US flag and an island paradise and a make up place to a jungle, the show is filmed along with many props in the studio. With the power of imagination and some movie magic, anything is possible when Barney's around.

The protagonist escapes from his life, full of commands and rules, first into the fantasy world of adulthood, then, trying to meet the challenges of going to school. Finally, he experiences the treacle of adolescence, when he is transformed from a clingy toddler into a novice, awkward adult by the conflicts of change. In Róbert Alföldi's film, children and adults play each other. The child in the adult role is very comic, and the adult relegated to the role of child is very awkward.
