A surprised coyote stowaway on a freight train ends up in Nashville where he meets a friendly beagle and an aspiring songwriter. The songwriter is unable to sell his songs, so he returns to California, taking the coyote back to his desert home

When brash Texas border officer Mike Norton wrongfully kills and buries the friend and ranch hand of Pete Perkins, the latter is reminded of a promise he made to bury his friend, Melquiades Estrada, in his Mexican home town. He kidnaps Norton and exhumes Estrada's corpse, and the odd caravan sets out on horseback for Mexico.

A coyote adopted by an old Navajo, Delgado, thinks he is a sheepdog, though he is not accepted by the other dogs of the area.

Ed Montenez is a Shadow Wolves Tracker and Border Patrol Agent hunting a lone Coyote who carries a mysterious package. Infused into the chase are a pair of rogue militiamen hell-bent on defending the border and a suspicious Federal Agent investigating border killings and corruption. No matter their motives, each one of them becomes indentured to the package once they uncover the nature of its contents.

When the farmer's away, all the animals play, and sing, and dance. Eventually, though, someone has to step in and run things, a responsibility that ends up going to Otis, a carefree cow.
