After being wrongfully convicted for stealing a pair of shoes, Stanley Yelnats is sent away to Camp Green Lake, a boys detention facility where inmates are forced to dig holes all day in the hot desert sun as a form of character building. But Stanley and the other boys start to unravel a mystery, linked with the camps tough-as-nails warden —and possibly Stanley’s family itself.

In several unrelated stories, the consequences of putting one's foot down – or failing to do so – are explored.

Khalid lives with his brother, Raza, his sister-in-law, Jamila, and his niece, Najma, in a humble household. Khalid's family struggles to make ends meet and fund his education. Despite their poverty, Jamila and Raza decide to arrange for Khalid's marriage, as per Khalid's wish, with his class fellow, Naheed, who belongs to a richer family. In Gossette (1923), Dulac experimented with and designed a number of special lenses and prisms to produce a variety of effects and multiply the expressive means which translate the characters' visions and mental states. She also reversed class and gender roles, as she made the female character Gossette come to the aid of Phillipe de Savières, falsely accused of murder, in order to save his name.

She becomes a suspect, but flees the scene in order to deliver a message to the dead man's brother. She is protected from the police by a night club entertainer, who she learns is the man she is seeking.
